Biography:
Constant Permeke was a leading Expressionist painter in his home country during the period between World War I and World War II. In 1914, he was severely injured and sent to England for recovery. Permeke returned to Belgium five years later, eventually building a home a studio in Jabbeke. His paintings normally depicted the aspects of life in a coastal town and portraits of fisherman. After 1935, Permeke began creating sculpture as well.
