Biography: Born in Germany, Balthasar Permoser initially worked in Italy from 1675 to 1689. Bernini heavily influenced his sculpture. In 1689, he was appointed court sculptor in Dresden, where he lived the remainder of his life. His greatest sculptural achievement was the decoration of the Zwinger palace for Augustus the Strong. Permoser worked mostly wood, ivory, stone, and sometimes colored marble.
