Biography: John Frederick Peto was one of the leading American still-life painters of the second half of the 19th century. He worked out of Philadelphia until 1889, when he retired in seclusion at Island Heights in New Jersey. He was virtually unknown during his lifetime but art critic, Alfred Frankenstein, discovered his work posthumously in the 1940’s. Peto’s painting style was similar to that of his friend, Harnett.
