Biography: The Phiale Painter was a prolific artist working in Athens during the fourth century B.C. Over 200 vases decorated by him have survived. He preferred to paint small amphorae and lekythoi, but also worked in many other sizes and shapes of vases. He worked primarily in the red-figure technique and decorated with scenes from mythology and daily life. He is identified by the characteristic of his work, his name deriving from a phiale ritual vessel, a shape that was rarely painted.
