Biography:
Nicolaes Eliasz. Pickenoy was the son of a mason. He may have studied with a portraitist in Amsterdam. By 1624, Pickenoy had established a reputation as a fashionable portraitist in Antwerp, remaining the leading figure until Rembrandt van Rijn’s arrival in the city. His style remained consistent throughout his career. He painted group and individual portraits with smooth brushstrokes, detailed textiles, and soft shadows. Pickenoy’s career began to falter after 1640. He probably was the teacher of Bartholomeus van der Helst.
