Biography:
Born in Pretoria, South African. Jacob Hendrik Pierneef was exiled in Holland during the Anglo-Boer War. After studying at Hilversum and Rotterdam Academy, he returned to his home country to work as a printmaker and painter. On a return trip to Holland, Pierneef came into contact with the ideas of Willem van Konijenberg and began adding geometric elements to his landscapes. He was commissioned by the Johannesburg Railway to create series of 32 murals for their stations. The panoramic landscapes border on abstract but still retain the characteristics of the Transvaal countryside.
