Biography: Taught by Francesco Salviati, Guiseppe Porta referred to himself by his master’s last name. He apprenticed with him in Rome beginning in 1535, where they decorated facades. Porta and Salviati went to Venice in 1539 and Porta remained there after his mentor’s departure in 1541. He established a reputation based on his decorations for palazzo facades and religious buildings. He returned to Rome in 1565 to work on the Vatican frescoes that were left unfinished after Salviati’s death. Porta was elected to Florence’s Accademia del Disegno and received his most significant commission to paint a ceiling fresco in Venice’s ducal palace not long after.
