Biography: Born in Italy, Candido Portinari preferred to paint Brazilian subjects, often workers and peasants. While in Europe from 1928 to 1931, he was inspired by Picasso’s paintings from the 1920’s and much of his work show similarities to those pieces. In the 1940’s, Portinari switched to painting biblical subjects. His reputation grew and he began receiving around the globe.
