Nationality: Portugese
Movement: Abstract Art
Media: Painting

Biography: Although she was born in Lisbon, Portugal, Paula Rego was educated in English schools while growing up and attended the Slade School of Art. There, she studied under Coldstream and also met and married fellow painter, Victor Willing. The couple lived in Portugal for some time before moving to London in 1963. Rego’s early work was strongly influenced by Dubuffet and she made abstract collages sometimes with political themes. However, her later work became figurative and she began creating compositions influenced by childhood stories and memories. A successful artist in the United Kingdom and Portugal, Rego became the first Associate Artist of the National Gallery in London in 1990. She also produced a mural in the Sainsbury Wing of the gallery in 1991.
