Artist: Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841 - 1919)
Nationality: French
Movement: Impressionism
Media: Painting, Sculpture
Influences:
Biography: Auguste Renoir was an Impressionist master who believed that the nude was one of the classic and ultimate forms of art. His interest in the human figure, primarily women developed from his admiration of painters, Boucher and Fragonard. It is thought that Renoir was possibly the last of a long line of European artists who devoted their career to studying human form. As a result of his interaction with Monet, Renoir focused on the use of light in conjunction with form, a feature of the Impressionist movement. Travels in Italy in the early 1880’s inspired him to create large scale bathing nudes, with an attempt at fresco-like surfaces. Despite his serene and content subject matter, Renoir was an awkward and introspective person, who developed arthritis among other inhibiting afflictions in his later life.
