Biography:
Guido Rey was an avid mountaineer who made several climbs in 1893 and in the same year produced a book about his experiences. He then began to photograph his adventures and won a silver medal from the Italian Alpine Club. He was also interested in Classical Greek and Roman compositions and created his own in the Pictorialist style after researching the Pompeii excavations and visiting Neapolitan museums. Rey later moved on to create images based on Old Master painters, primarily the Dutch School art of Pieter de Hooch and Jan Vermeer. He visited the United States and was afterwards published in Alfred Stieglitz’s journal, Camera Work in 1908.
