Biography:
Nicknames Lo Spagnoletto, meaning “the little Spaniard,” Jusepe Ribera first studied in Valencia under Francisco Ribalta. He then traveled to Rome to study Raphael’s famous frescoes, and Parma to examine the work of Correggio. After settling in Naples, Ribera’s work gained attention from the Spanish viceroy and he became he well-known religious and genre-subject painter. He often painted grotesque subjects like the martyrdom of the saints and the strange components of contemporary life. His later works were calmer and more contemplative.
