Biography:
Tilman Riemenschnider settled in Wurzburg in 1482 where he established himself as a leading late Gothic sculptor. He primarily sculpted out of stone but was also a talented woodcarver. In addition to art, Riemenschneider held public offices. In 1525, he was briefly imprisoned for refusing to resort to violent actions against the rebels during the Peasants’ War. One of Riemenschneider’s most famous works is the Holy Blood altarpiece located in St Jacobskirche Rothenburn ober der Tauber.
