Biography:
German immigrant, Jean-Henri Riesener studied under Jean-Francois Oeben, marrying his widow in order to help his career as an ebeniste. In 1769, he began supplying the Furniture Warehouse of the Crow and became to official Cabinetmaker to the King five years later. Riesener was noted for his lavishly decorated pieces that contained innovative mechanical fittings. He earned a fortune from commissions from Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and other French noble families. Riesener spent the French Revolution avoiding death by removing the royal emblems from his furniture. Believing that the monarchy would be reinstated, he spent his savings buying back his pieces. As this never happened, Riesener died in obscurity.
