Biography:
The early details of John Riley’s career in portraiture are unclear. However, his presence in the field began after Lely’s death in 1680 and lasted until Kneller rose to dominance. In 1688, he was appointed principal painter to William III and Mary II, along with Kneller. But his best portraits were not done in the court, they depicted sitters from the lower classes. The two most famous of these portraits were The Scullion and Bridget Holmes. Riley also taught Jonathan Richardson the Elder.
