Nationality: Canadian
Movement: Modern Canadian School
Media: Painting

Biography: Jean-Paul Riopelle began painting landscapes as a child, and eventually studied at Montreal Polytechnic majoring in architecture. In 1943, he reverted back to art and attended the Montreal Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Ecole du Meuble. His interest in abstraction developed when he met Paul-Emile Borduas, a member of the French-Canadian art group, Les Automatistes. They also sparked Riopelle’s interest in Surrealism and mechanical techniques. In 1947, he moved to Paris and continued his studies in Surrealism with the help of Marcel Decamp. His paintings became very sculptural as he began squeezing paint directly from the tube and shaping it with a palette knife. In the late 1950’s, Riopelle also created bronze sculptures of figures. His latest work is in mixed media and collage.
