Biography:
Tom Roberts was born in England but moved to Australia, working mostly in Melbourne. He was a primary figure in the introduction of Impressionism to the country and is considered a founder of Australia’s landscape traditions. He also spent a good deal of his career in Europe. After returning to Australia in 1885, he became a leader of the Heidelberg School, basing his work on the plein d’air style of painting. Roberts painted landscapes and portraits primarily, but also created historical and genre scenes.
