Biography: Despite Nicolas Roerich’s varied interests, he worked primarily as a landscape painter. He focused on fantastical scenes of Russia that were suggestive of his native country’s pagan history. He also created designs for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes, including Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Roerich was also an archeologist and anthropologist. From 1925 to 1928, he embarked on an expedition throughout Central Asia. From 1928 to his death in 1947, he was the director of a research station in the Kulu Valley in India.
