Biography: Christian Rohlfs was a German printmaker and painter. For most of his career, he worked in a tradition naturalistic style. However, at the age of 50 he was introduced to the work of the Post-Impressionists. He was very impressed by the vibrant color and emotion in Van Gogh’s paintings. Rohlfs became a founding father of German Expressionism, creating inventive scenes of towns, landscapes, and flowers. Despite his success in the new style, he was declared a degenerate artist by the Nazis in 1937 and died a year later.
