Biography: Rosso Fiorentino’s first studied under Andrea del Sarto alongside colleague, Jacopo Pontormo. His early paintings show the influence of his teacher and also Fra Bartolommeo. Rosso went to Rome in 1524 where he was strongly inspired by Michelangelo’s art. He went north after the Sack of Rome, eventually settling in Venice in 1530. Francois I invited him to France to work for the court on an array of projects, notably decorations for the palace of Fontainebleau. Rosso worked on Galerie Francois I from 1533 to 1540, completing this last project before his death later that year.
