Biography:
Raised in Antwerp, Peter Paul Rubens was intended for a law career, until he took up painting under the instruction of the members of the Antwerp’s Painter’s Guild. Rubens was court painter to the Duke of Mantua, Vincenzo Gonzaga from 1600 to 1608 and traveled throughout Italy and Spain during that period, working in churches. He was then the court painter to Archduke Albrecht of the Netherlands in Antwerp, where he continued to work on portraits and large religious pieces. After being knighted by both Charles I and Phillip IV, Rubens retired in 1670 to work on landscapes until his death.
