Nationality: American
Movement: Synchromism

Biography: Morgan Russell was born in New York and studied sculpture at the Art Students’ League. He also studied painting under Robert Henri. He moved to Paris in 1908 and studied at Matisse’s art school for a short time. After meeting Stanton Macdonald-Wright in 1911, the two began developing theories about color and its relationship to pattern. In 1913, they introduced one of the first avant-garde movements, Synchromism. Russell received acclaim for his Synchromy in Orange. Later in his career, Russell turned to figurative work that was less successful. He returned to the United States in 1946.
