Biography: Carl Borromaus Andreas Ruthart initially was trained in Danzig, present day Gdansk, Poland. He visited Rome in 1659 and then resided in Antwerp from 1663 to 1664, where he joined the painter’s guild and was influenced by animal painter, Frans Synders. Ruthart took up animal painting as his specialty and was hired to paint animals in the landscapes and architectural scenes of other painters such as Wilhelm van Ehrenberg. Ruthart went to Vienna from 1665 to 1667. Five years later, he went from Venice to Rome and was inspired by the work of Giovanni Battista Castiglione. While in Rome, Ruthart joined the Celestine monastery and began painting altarpieces before transferring to the monastery at L’Aquila.
