Biography: During Albert Pinkham Ryder’s formal education, he contracted a serious illness that impaired his vision. Ryder used painting as a way to pass the time as he recovered, finding that he had some potential to paint seriously. He moved to New York in 1867 and studied under William Edgar Marshall. He then enrolled in the National Academy of Design and traveled to Europe several times. Becoming reclusive in his late life, Ryder converted his subject matter from landscapes to metaphysical paintings inspired by religion and poetry.
