Biography:
Gabriel de Saint-Aubin first studied with a genre painter and then with Francois Boucher. He entered and lost the Prix-de-Rome three times before settling on exhibiting and teaching at the Academie de Saint-Luc. Best known for his illustrations and miniature drawings, Saint-Aubin lived a humble life producing his small scenes of Parisian life. He made a living as an engraver while experimenting with gouache and pastel. However, his aspirations were always to become a painter. His drawings were praised as some of the best of his time and on par with those of Jean-Antoine Watteau.
