Biography:
Jacques-Francois-Joseph Saly trained in his hometown of Valenciennes before traveling to Paris. After winning the Prix-de-Rome, he studied at the Academie de France in Rome from 1740 to 1748. While there, he developed a taste for the Neoclassical style, producing a drawing series of ornamental vases that were later engraved and published. After his 1750 Salon exhibition of the antique-inspired sculpture Faun Holding a Goat, Saly was granted membership to the Academie Royale. This marble sculpture was reproduced extensively in bronze, plaster and porcelain. He worked briefly for Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour before moving to Copenhagen in 1753 to create a sculpture of Frederick V of Denmark. He remained in the country for the following twenty years, becoming the director of the Danish Academy of Art and producing monuments and portrait busts for the Danish court members. In 1774, Saly returned to France and was the first sculptor to join the Order of St. Michael, an honor bestowed upon him by Louis XV.
