Biography:
Born in Spain to Portuguese parents, Alonso Sanchez Coello first studied under Anthonis Mor in Flanders. Beginning in 1559, he was employed at the court of Phillip II of Spain and was one of the king’s preferred portraitists. Sanchez Coello’s is considered the father of Spanish formal portraiture. He also painted religious works.
