Biography:
John Singer Sargent was born in Florence to American parents. As a child he moved throughout Europe, living in Nice Rome, and Dresden at times. He received formal painting training in 1870's in France and Italy. Sargent painted landscapes but was most recognized for his portraiture. Sargent painted alongside Monet at Giverny, using the aged artist as a subject for one of his pieces. He settled in London in 1885 after a unfavorable encounter with the French news press. He was commissioned as a decorative artist for public buildings in 1910 and served as a war artist from 1914 to 1918.
