Biography:
Godfried Schalcken was the son of a minister who first studied under two of Rembrandt’s students. He then was taught by Gerrit Dou of Leiden, with whom he stayed for three years before returning to his hometown of Dordrecht in 1665. He specialized in genre and history paintings until the city’s most popular portraitist, Nicolaes Maes left for Amsterdam in 1673. Schalcken inherited his reputation as Dordrecht’s most sought-after portrait painter. He joined The Hague’s painter’s society in 1691 and then lived in England from 1692 to 1697. Schalcken spent his final years in The Hague and died a wealthy man in 1706.
