Biography:
Dutch painter, Ary Scheffer spent his career in Paris and became a French citizen in 1850. His early work was centered on literary themes. He later painted religious subjects and portraits. His work was popular during his lifetime but has since lost its appeal. A good collection of Scheffer’s pieces can be found in the museum in Dordrecht.
