Biography:
Martin Schongauer was the son of a prominent goldsmith in the Alsatian city, Colmar. He developed his own technique of engraving and helped perfect the medium along with his Rhine Valley colleagues. His work shows the influence of Rogier van der Weyden. Schongauer completed 115 known engraving during his career that became significant examples for later printmakers, including Albrecht Durer.
