Biography: Sebastiano del Piombo first studied with Giovanni Bellini before training under Giorgione. Upon the death of the latter, he worked alongside Titian to complete some of his unfinished work. In 1511, Sebastiano moved to Rome and made the acquaintance of Raphael. The two had a falling out and he began a friendship with Michelangelo. Sebastiano developed a way to paint on stone in order to ensure that his work would last. In 1531, Pope Clement VII appointed him to the position of “piombo,” the supervisor of the creation of lead seals that were attached to papal bills. He became a monk and continued to paint some portraits until his death in 1547.
