Biography: Gerard Seghers was a Flemish painter who concentrated on religious subjects. It is thought that he studied under Janssen in his birthplace of Antwerp. It is likely that he then spent the rest of 1610’s in Italy where he was one of the few notable Flemish followers of Caravaggio. In the 1620’s, he became heavily influenced by Rubens. Seghers had a successful career creating altarpieces in Antwerp and surrounding cities. He also worked as an international art dealer.
