Biography: Originally intended to become a schoolteacher, Gerard Sekoto’s training introduced him to drawing and painting and encouraged him to create an art career. He then moved to Johannesburg and painted landscapes and scenes of everyday black life. In 1940, one of Sekoto’s works was purchased by the Johannesburg Art Gallery and remained the only painting by a black artist for over twenty years. He moved to Paris in 1947 and lived in France for the rest of his life, however he still painted primarily South African subjects in European styles such as Impressionism, Cubism, and Orphism.
