Artist: Georges Seurat (1859 - 1891)
Nationality: French
Movement: Post-Impressionism
Media: Painting
Influences:

Biography:
Seurat acquired the role of the founder of Neoimpressionism because his work embraced the landscape and Parisian scenes of impressionism but contained other symbolic influences. For example, his paintings explore light and color thoroughly, but his figures contain references to Egyptian art. Seurat is also credited with the development of Divisionism, which unlike Pointillism used small dots of paint of the tip of a brush to create color separations, rather than merging them together. This technique is seen in his most famous painting, Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the Grande Jatte. Seurat was trained by Henri Lehmann, who in turn, studied under his idol, Ingres. His first work, conte crayon drawings of painter, Aman-Jean were displayed in 1883, followed by his first painting exhibition in 1884. Seurat’s career ended suddenly by his untimely death at the age of 32. The French Post-Impressionist painter Seurat was born and died in Paris. His main achievement was the development of Pointillism, a system of painting by applying colors in dots of relatively uniform size. He painted a few very large paintings, spending a year or more on each of them after he had completed an endless series of preliminary studies. Two of his famous large-scale compositions are -The Bathers - of 1883-84, with the Impressionist characteristics of brilliant colors and the effects of intense sunlight, and - The Side Show - (La Parade) of 1887-88. He believed that the tiny dots of color would merge in the viewer's eye and produce intermediary tints more luminous than those obtainable from pigments mixed on the palette. The synthetic, austere character of his pictures resulted from his reaction to Impressionism. He wanted to keep the vitality of Impressionism, stay with its subject matter and use of color and luminosity. But he also sought an architectonic precision, and an art of harmony through geometrizing form and the studied control of color and composition. Little is known about him privately; he kept largely to himself and worked incessantly.
