Biography:
John Smibert was born in Scotland and immigrated to the United States in 1728. While still in Europe, he traveled throughout Italy and also had a successful portrait studio in Longon. In 1730, he settled in Boston and opened an engraving studio and artist supply store. His original works were displayed above the store. This set-up constituted America’s first art gallery.
