Biography: Frans Snyders was born in Antwerp and studied under Pieter Brueghel the Younger. He was a member of a circle of artists including Peter Paul Rubens, Jacob Jordaens, and Jan Brueghel the Elder that helped to make the city into a center of artistic development. Snyders specialized in animal painting, often depicting hunting scenes. He also produced some still-life paintings. He also often assisted Rubens by painting the animals and still-life portions of the master’s paintings.
