Biography:
Massimiliano Soldani-Benzi was the son of an aristocratic military leader from Tuscany who began sculpting from models as a child. He attended the Medici drawing school at the age of nineteen and was soon sent to Rome by the Grand Duke Cosimo III de Medici. While in Rome, Soldani-Benzi began producing portrait medallions. He was then sent to Paris to work with a famous medalist. Refusing commissions from Louis XIV because of his loyalty to Cosimo, he returned to Florence and was made director the Granducal Mint. In addition to medals, Soldani-Benzi also created bronze reliefs, figures, and busts inspired by antiquity. His Florence studio was located in the Galleria degli Uffizi and employed more than ten assistants.
