Biography:
Stanfield Clarkson was an English painter who focused on marine subjects in his work. He was particularly interested in this subject because he was a sailor from 1808 to1816. He primarily worked for the merchant service but spent some time in the Royal Navy. In his early artistic career, he worked as a theatrical scene painter and created dioramas. In the 1830’s, he devoted himself to easel paintings and was nicknamed England’s van de Velde. Along with Turner, Stanfield was one of the best British marine painters of the 19th century.
