Biography:
Tobias Stimmer hailed from a long line of artists that included his father and five brothers. In 1565, he founded a workshop in Schaffhausen that produced many large decorative schemes among other paintings, all of which have since been destroyed. Stimmer also painted portraits. IN 1570, he moved to Strasbourg to illustrate anti-Catholic literature. While there, he also produced woodcuts and portraits and created decorations for Strasbourg Cathedral’s astronomical clock. Stimmer was an influential figure in Swiss art, inspiring later artists such as Daniel Lindtmayer.
