Biography:
Hans Thoma was a German painter who specialized in landscapes in his early career. He tended to take inspiration for these paintings from his home in the Black Forest. He later turned to figurative paintings that earned him a reputation then but are now criticized. From 1899 on, he was the director of the Kunsthalle in Karlsruhe where most of his work is presently located.
