Biography:
William Turnbull served as a pilot in World War II before studying at the Slade School from 1946 to 1948. He moved to Paris in after finishing school and remained there until 1950. He was a close friend to Paolozzi and also had contact with Brancusi and Giacometti. His sculpture was initially Surrealist, but he eventually turned to painted steel geometric work. He was also one of the first British painters to adopt the style of the American Field Painters.
