Biography:
George Vertue was an English engraver who specialized in portraits and antiquarian subject matter. In 1717, he was elected the official engraver for the Society of Antiquaries. His greatest contribution was his was his collection of notes about the history of English art. These documents were bought by Horace Walpole after Vertue’s death. Walpole used this information to compile his book Anecdotes of Painting in England.
