Biography: Simon de Vliegar was born in Rotterdam and worked there during his career. He also spent time in Delft and Amsterdam. He was one of the leading marine painters of his day. He initially painted stormy weather scenes, much like those of Porcellis. He later focused on tranquil images that were influenced by van de Cappelle and Wilhelm van de Velde. De Vliegar also created landscapes, etchings, drawings, and stained glass window designs.
