Biography:
Jean-Antoine Watteau studied under Gérin until his death, when he moved to Paris and worked for scene-painter Métayer. During that time he also worked in a factory that produced cheap religious paintings, until Claude Gillot employed him. After receiving an award in 1709, Watteau was admitted to the Academy and became a full member in 1717. Originally he painted military subjects, but later adopted the popular idyllic subjects.
