Biography:
After studying under Robert Campin in his hometown of Tournai, Belgium, Rogier Van der Weyden moved to Brussels where he established his reputation. He worked as the official court painter to the city and the Burgundian court beginning in1436. Van der Weyden’s expressive and colorful portraits were known for their technical and compositional aptitude. His paintings involved religious themes and conveyed psychological characteristics of the figures, a quality that influenced many future Flemish artists.
