Biography: Francis Wheatley first trained at William Shipley’s London academy and began winning drawing prizes at the age of fifteen. In 1769, he enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools and was elected to the Society of Artists a year later. After a four year period in Dublin, he returned to London and began painting genre scenes, portraits, landscapes and some historical paintings. Wheatley was admitted to the Royal Academy in 1791.
