Biography: Born as Johannes Josephus Zauffaly in Germany, he first apprenticed to a pupil of Francesco Solimena before traveling to Italy and adopting the Rococo style. In 1761, he moved to England and began painting small group scenes. He was commissioned by various patrons to paint scenes of actor’s on stage that were later engraved in mezzotint. King George III was a patron of Zofanny’s and nominated him to the Royal Academy in 1769. He later traveled to Italy and remained there for seven years before returning to England.
