E.J. Hughes: Work from the Early 1930s to Present
Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver, CA Canada

The Vancouver Art Gallery starts the new year with a major retrospective honouring the work of British Columbian landscape painter E.J. Hughes. A true son of British Columbia, Hughes’ stylized realism has earned him a unique place in the history of Canadian art. Opening on Thursday, January 30, the exhibition includes work from the 1930’s to 2000 and highlights evocative symbols of life on the west coast—ferries crossing the Georgia Straight, picturesque fishing villages and farm houses, flaming arbutus trees and imposing coastal mountains. - Read Indepth Article at www.absolutearts.com

Treasures of Modern Art: The Legacy of Phyllis Wattis at SFMOMA
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, USA

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) presents Treasures of Modern Art: The Legacy of Phyllis Wattis at SFMOMA. This special exhibition will highlight and celebrate works of art acquired by SFMOMA due to the vision and generosity of devoted trustee and patron, Phyllis Wattis, who passed away in June 2002 at the age of 97. The exhibition will feature more than 80 of her most important gifts—including works by Robert Rauschenberg, Piet Mondrian, René Magritte, Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol and Barnett Newman, among others—offering a unique look at the lasting impact Wattis had on SFMOMA. It will focus on works acquired between the years 1995 and 2002, the most significant period of Wattis’s philanthropic activity. - Read Indepth Article at www.absolutearts.com

Jacquelyn Schiffman: Sitting on Air
Figureworks, Williamsburg, USA United States of America

Figureworks is pleased to be hosting a striking and unusual new body of work by Jacquelyn Schiffman. This new series of figurative work is done predominantly in wax and acrylic on a semi-transparent, polyester, spun-web 'canvas'. Using paint and wax on this spunbound material, in an encaustic approach, Ms. Schiffman has produced stunning results. The figures take on an abstracted, dream-like quality, not only due to the artist's hand, but also by the magic of the material itself. - Read Indepth Article at www.absolutearts.com

Marc Chagall: Engravings from 1951 to 1964
Fundacao Arpad Szenes - Vieira da Silva, Lisbon, PT Portugal

The graphic work by Marc Chagall displayed at the Foundation is part of the Maeght Foundation collection and represents a selection of lithograths produced over a period of fifteen years. This important work undertaken by one of this century’s greatest painters in a more covert, but by no means less important field, provides us with a closer and more intimate look at the artist and his career. - Read Indepth Article at www.absolutearts.com
