  • Arsmundi The Fourth International Conference of the Visual Arts The 4th international conference of the visual arts will gather artists from Canada and around the world to share ideas and discuss common issues. Vancouver, Canada was selected to host this conference in 1997.Arts in Action Society, Avenue for the Arts,Central Visual Artists Association, and the Alliance of Pacific Visual Artists, groups based in Vancouver, are joining forces to make this a major international event. The previous conference were held in Oaxtepec (Mexico, 1987,) San Francisco (USA, 1989) and Assisi (Italy, 1995). The idea was initiated by COMAV (Consejo Mundial de Artistas Visuales), an artists organisation based in Mexico. This event will take place at the Roundhouse Community Centre (Canada). The components of the conference are: An exhibition, conference, a collaborative public art creation, an Internet website allowing distance participation in the conference. EXHIBITION A presentation of works by Canadian and International artists, on the theme of "Communication and Understanding". It will be open from August 7th to August 20th. During the first week (7th to the 14th), local artists will offer hands-on workshops and lectures open to the public, as well as guided tours of the exhibition. CONFERENCE August 15, 16, 17 and 18 will be the conference proper. Proposed topics for discussion are: Strategies for international art exchanges Contemporary Worldwide Indigenous Visual arts issues Art in the context of technological change The political impact of the arts The artist in the city: Art in public places, alternative non-traditional spaces Cultural "Industries". The economic aspect of art. Artists rights, censorship The changing roles of Museums and galleries The effect of art criticism on the production of art Art and the non-artist: the public's expectations We invite any other suggestions. The theme will also be " Communication and Understanding". We are asking all artists who want to participate to bring an object specific to where they live, for inclusion in the larger work. INTERNET WEB-SITE Papers from our conference, as well as from artists unable to attend, will be posted on the site. This will enhance the ability of the public to access and participate in the conference. Possible online Real Audio broadcast of the discussions, with communication capabilities established, will allow a broad range of voices to be heard and spoken, at the conference, and from computers around the globe. It will facilitate a dialogue among a much broader spectrum of artists , and allow them as well as many interested Internet users to benefit from this international sharing of ideas. All papers and presentations will be available in English, French and Spanish. Interaction with local galleries, studios and art schools will be offered to visiting artists. CATALOGUE Documentation for this event will be an exhibition catalogue, with summaries of the various presentations. All decisions and resolutions generated by the conference will be compiled and published and made available to all participants and interested parties. CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS!
